  10 Dec 07   Gentlemen,

I would like to take a few seconds to thank all those who participated in this past weekend's events. I know how difficult it is to take time away from your families, especially around the holidays. But, that is exactly the time when we are needed the most.

On Saturday, 8 Dec, you helped serve over 130 pancake breakfasts in a cause to help benefit the Children's Hospital. Special thanks goes to Dave Akers who played a fantastic Santa.

Next, on Sunday, 9 Dec, you again helped serve over 120 pancake breakfasts to members of our parish at our monthly pancake breakfast. Thanks goes to all who participated, with special thanks to Gene Hazen and Rodger Blake who are there buying the food, cooking and setting up and tearing down month after month. Also, a quick thanks to Dan and Delores Collins for getting the youth involved in this project. The young adults that are signing up have been a great help, have been performing admirably and have been a great joy to work with.

Lastly, on Sunday, 9 Dec, you again showed your colors by serving over 400 hot dogs at the military chapel in Murphy Canyon. Calvin Rodriguez, thanks for organizing the event and allowing us to participate. Our military and their families are far too important to neglect, I was proud and honored to assist you yesterday.

And so goes another weekend in the life of Council 7902 at Ascension. I couldn't be more pround to call you all my brothers. I greatly appreciated all you do.

Fraternally,
Rick Kania

26 Nov 07   Worthy Chapter President,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of Bishop Buddy Assembly for their participation in our Thanksgiving Mass which was held on 22 November 2007.
On short notice, they graciously accepted an offer to participate as the Honor Guard in our Mass at Asencion. Their presence added a touch of pride, not only in country but in the Knights of Columbus. Their impeccable uniforms and attention to detail enhanced the Mass not only for me, but for all those in attendance. Again, I say, Thank you, Bishop Buddy Assembly, for a job well done!”

Fraternally,
Rick Kania

  26 Nov 07   Gentlemen,

I trust everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! For my family it was a great kick-off to what I know will be a fantastic Christmas Season. Now what I would like you all to do, if you haven't already, is buy your tickets to the New Year's Eve Luau. And invite your friends. It won't be a party unless you are there. Time is getting short. Buy now!

5 Nov 07   I am forwarding this on behalf of Fr. Chuck.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: Diologue with Bishop Brom on Thursday, Nov 8th (7pm)Bishop Brom has asked to visit with us and address the whole subject of "Sexual Abuse and Related Matters" here at Ascension Church in a town hall fashion on Thursday November 8th at 7 PM. While primarily addressed to the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council membership, all of you are invited to join us, hear from the bishop, and get your questions/concerns answered. His hope is to "help us on the way to restoring trust, renewing hope and embracing our mission."

  5 Nov 07   Gentlemen,

This Saturday, after the 5:30 Mass, we will celebrate our Past Grand Knights Dinner in the St. Mary's Room. If you wish to wear a tie to the event, that is up to you. But a collared shirt will be fine. I am looking for a few volunteers to set up at 3:30 if you can make it. It shouldn't take long.

This Sunday as was announced is our monthly pancake breakfast. If you can assist with any part of it, I would greatly appreciate it. And as always if you can't work it, please stop by for breakfast and fellowship.

Lastly our initial announcement for the Rockin' New Year's Eve Luau went very well. Thank you Mike and Chuck for helping making the pitch. Tickets go on sale this weekend and we will need volunteers to help sell tickets after each Mass. Please respond to let me know which Mass you can help at. This is the beginning of the crucial push. All the planning in the world will not ensure a good party without people to attend.

Fraternally,
Rick Kania

  24 Oct 07   Gentlemen,

Please read and take action regarding the attached document. Tierra Santa homes were spared this time. But I can easily recall the events of our evacuation and the loss of friends homes in 2003.

  18 Oct 07   Aloha Brothers,

The time is right to get the ROCKIN' NEW YEAR'S LUAU off to a grand start. Attached is the flyer that, with Fr. Chuck's permission, will be slotted in church bulletins in the not so distant future.

In order to make the event really work though, we need each of you to "sell" the party.
Get the flyers out to family and friends. I am really enthusiastic about this years party and I'm looking forward to a fantastic time. More to follow.

  17 Oct 07   Brothers,

Below is from the desk of Fr. Chuck. Please read.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Good morning everyone. I should like to invite all the memembers of the Parish Pastoral Council (and any other parishioner who wishes to join us) to the next regular meeting of the Parish Finance Council set for Monday, October 22nd in the St. M ary's Room at 7 PM. In addition to the usual business of "how are things going" (including recently completed and planned church repair & building projects) we will be joined by Fred Baranowski, a member of the Diocesan Finance Council. Fred, a parishioner of Ascension, will address the settlement reached by the diocese, and the efforts being made to reach out to the victims while still meeting the needs of the people of the Church, including the campaign being conducted to raise part of that money from the people of the Church. No we will not be serving wine or dinner -- just facts!
P. S. Meeting will be ended at 8:30 PM regardless...

  16 Oct 07   Brothers,

Sorry I haven't updated you regarding the Past Grand Knight's Dinner. I've been waiting for information. But let me tell you what we have so far.

Because we were unable to get the minimum number required for the Butcher Shop, the council decided to hold the Past Grand Knight's Dinner at the St. Mary's Room after the 5:30 Mass on 10 November 2007.

We will discuss the menu at our Officers Meeting this Thursday. I will get the information out to you all on Friday regarding menu, cost etc.

I am looking forward to a fun filled night with families and friends.

For those of you who have expressed an interest in attending and no longer wish to attend please let me know.

For those of you who have either changed their minds and would like to attend or have not yet responded, please
let me know.

More to follow.

Lastly, Lee Beel and Chuck Rhodes, I appreciate your patience. Being moved from place to place and working hard demonstrates to me what being a Knight is all about.

Brother Knights

The Regina Coeli Council 4953 will host BOTH a First and Second Degree Exemplification Ceremony on Thursday, September 13th in the K of C Hall, located at 515 W. Valley Parkway in Escondido.

Check-in time for the 1st Degree will be 6:45 p.m. We plan to close the Main Entrance Door (on the West side of the building next to the parking lot) at 7:15 p.m. Our council will start the 1st Degree at 7:15 p.m.

For those that arrive after 7:15 p.m., they can enter the hall through the street entrance on the North side of the building. They can wait in the bar area until the 1st Degree is completed.

The 2nd Degree will be conducted by the District 104 Second Degree Team from San Marcos and will start as soon as possible following the 1st Degree (approximately 8:15 p.m.).

At this time we do not have an estimated number of candidates for the First Degree, but we will be flexible and take care of all who show up on time.

All councils should provide membership cards, rosaries, and copies of "These Men They Call Knights" for their candidates.

As all of you should know, there is a Third Degree Exemplification Ceremony scheduled for Sunday, September 23rd at Council 13007 in Lakeside, so this is a great opportunity to have all of your council's candidates complete all three of their degrees this month.

Hope to see you all Thursday evening - September 13th

22 Aug 07   Brothers,   I just received word that Sylvester (Sy) Burke died on Sunday.   His service is the August 31st.

Also,  I received the following from Rodger Blake: My son is doing very well. They took all of the tubes out except for the one that drains the fluid off his brain. He was allowed to eat his first meal today. He is still not out of the woods but doing much better. Keep the prayers going. He still needs them.

See you tomorrow.

  15 Aug 07   Brothers,

We have been given the opportunity to raise $700 for our Scholarship fund. The taste of Tierra Santa has rented Ascension's tents and are asking for help setting them up
and taking them down. The work would entail Arriving at 9am on the 25th and setting the tents up, then on the 26th show up at 11AM to tear down and stow the tents back at the church.

The ball is in our court, I would like to give the Taste of Tierra Santa an answer on Monday the 20th.  Please respond as soon as possible.

We need a couple of volunteers to sell BBQ tickets after the all the Sunday Masses this
weekend. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help.  I would like to coordinate with Dustin to show you how to use the credit card machine.

Ross is doing a fantastic job with getting this event together.  Aside from a few things here and there, our main concern is ticket sales.  Please buy yours as soon as possible and encourage friends and neighbors to do the same.  Its for a great cause.

Remember, we will be accepting credit and debit cards this year...spread the word.

Gentlemen, the Installation is a celbration of our council and the officers that we've elected to guide us through the next

  7 May 07   Brothers,

We are in need of volunteers for security for Fiesta. Please contact Dustin Butcher with the times you are available to work. From my perspective, security involves "showing the force". If you haven't been to Fiesta before, our volunteer security wears an "security "T" shirt" and walks around. There will be specific things to look for and certain areas to patrol, but it is not difficult. In my opinion, its one of the best jobs at Fiesta. You get to walk around, eat and enjoy the atmosphere.

Please volunteer..

Dustin's email: dustin@mrfixitsd.com

3 May 07   Brothers, I am forwarding this email for Bill Wilson:Bill, if you are looking for shift workers....put me down for the first shift on Saturday and Sunday. After that, I think I will probably be tied up with security.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rick,
Would you please poll the members to see if
anyone is interested in working in the "money room"
during the Fiesta. This would entail in periodic
money pick-ups at the booths, making sure someone is
in the "money room" at all times to keep the monies
secure and make change for the various booths. This
would also include remaining an hour or two after
each day ends for the final daily money count and the
run to the bank for the night deposit. They will get
periodic breaks throughout the day and evening.
I am looking for 3-5 people. Needless to say the
more people, the easier it is. If more information is
needed, they can contact me at the Parish Office or
my cell phone (619) 890-7919 or at home (619) 448-
7919. I appreciate you doing this.

Best regards,
Bill Wilson

3 May 07   Brothers, Brian Finn (I hope that's the correct spelling) is looking for volunteers to help set up Fiesta on Wednesday the 6th of June. Start time will be 9:00am. This is a huge undertaking and the more help we can get the better it will be for all. Brian also understands that we have work and other commitments. If we can make it in the afternoon, he assures me that there will be work to do.

On Friday June 8th Dennis and Yolanda James will need help unloading the containers for the White Elephant sale. The bins don't empty themselves. And Dennis insists that he is getting too old to do it himself.

I don't often beat the horse into submission, but in this case, putting on Fiesta requires our help. We need to step up to the challenge as Knights. I know that most of us, if not all of us who are able are working during Fiesta, but there will be no Fiesta without setup! Please let me know when you can make it and I will pass it on to Brian and Dennis.

(PS wives, friends and other family members are most welcomed)

Brothers:
Just wanted you to know, i am feeling great. The surgery was monday morning April 9th.They cut a hole through my scalp just above my left ear, then sawed my skull which wasn't too thick or hard then cut an opening through the layer over my brain then scooped out some tumor. The doctor said he took out all he could get and then closed everything up. I woke up monday about 1:00 p.m. and was wide awake with my brain fully working. No loss of memory at all. I fought a headache and dizziness for a couple of days but I am feeling better and better each day. I am planning on coming to church and breakfast on sunday. If dave wants me to set up the tables or gene wants me to cook breakfast forget it. I don't think i could do the correct order. I want everyone to know that all of your prayers made a huge difference in the doctors work and my results. I care for you all and thank God for you all.

See you on Sunday

  13 April 07   Brothers,

A plea from Brother Chuck Rhoades:
If you, a family member or a trusted neighbor fits the bill and are willing to volunteer, please contact Chuck.
------------------------------------------------------
Needed two persons, can be parent and youth 18 years or older. Must be committed to complete weekend beginning about 45 minutes before Friday opening for briefing (unless done ahead of time) and working throughout the fiesta usually until about 1 hour past closing each day. Each person will be responsible for overseeing 5-6 games making sure workers are in place each two hour increment. Every two hours game tickets are picked up and counted (this is primary time consumption.) There is time for yourself in between and if you need to break away for an hour or so the other supervisor can cover. No work is required ahead of the fiesta nor once it is over. Call Chuck Rhoades 858-278-7416 for additional information or to volunteer and put his
mind at rest.

Yesterday I received word from Sandy (Jim's wife) that Jim came out of surgery as well as can be expected. (even his sense of humor).

I'll tell you about it at the meeting this Thursday. The doctor feels as if he got most, if not all of the tumor. Of course tests still need to be run to determine if cancer was present. Jim may come home from the hospital as soon as tomorrow. The power of prayer.

I will keep you posted.

  19 Mar 07   Brothers,

It often seems as if the only time we hear from people is when it is negative. We need this. We could use a little more of that. But I just wanted to say how much I appreciate all you do for our council and our church.

Thank you to all who participated in Soup and Luke on the 16th of March, it was a complete success.

I also want you to keep in mind that the end of the Columbian year is coming to an end soon. We (you and I) need to start thinking about being officers in the council. If you are interested, ask questions. You are not here because the council is here, the council is here because you are here.

13 Mar 07   Brothers, I found this article today and thought you may be interested in it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Pope upholds Communion, celibacy bansVATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday reiterated the Church's ban on Communion for divorced Catholics who remarry and left it up to bishops whether Catholic politicians should receive Communion if they support abortion rights or gay marriage.

In a 131-page document, the pope also upheld the Vatican's requirement for celibacy for priests in the Latin rite Church. "Priestly celibacy lived with maturity, joy and dedication is an immense blessing for the Church and for society itself," the pope wrote.

The document embraced recommendations made by bishops from around the world at a 2005 meeting at the Vatican that rejected any change in the celibacy requirement. Benedict acknowledged the shortage of clergy in some parts of the world, but said bishops should "on no account" lower admission standards to seminaries to compensate. "Certainly, a more equitable distribution of clergy would help to solve the problem," Benedict wrote, without being specific.

Benedict also acknowledged "the painful situations" of divorced Catholics who can no longer receive Communion after they remarry. The Catholic Church does not permit divorce and views such faithful as living in sin if they remarry and consummate their new marriages.

If efforts to annul the first marriages fail, and the couple continues to live together in their new marriage, "the Church encourages these members of the faithful to commit themselves to living their relationship ... as friends, as brother and sister," Benedict said. He was reiterating a stance held by his predecessor, John Paul II, that divorced Catholics who remarry cannot have sex with their new partners if they want to receive the Eucharist.

The question of whether Catholic politicians who support stands that conflict with Church
teaching should be denied Communion gained attention during the 2004 U.S. presidential election campaign, when St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke said he would deny the Eucharist to Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, a Catholic who was supporting abortion rights.

Benedict indicated that local bishops must deal with these cases."Catholic politicians and legislators, conscious of their grave responsibility before society, must feel particularly bound, on the basis of a properly formed conscience, to introduce and support laws inspired by values grounded in human nature," Benedict wrote.Politicians are called upon to decide about fundamental values, including respect for life "from conception to natural death, the family built upon marriage between a man and a woman, the freedom to educate one's children and the promotion of the common good in all its values," Benedict wrote.

"There is an objective connection here with the Eucharist. Bishops are bound to reaffirm
constantly these values as part of their responsibility to the flock entrusted to them," the pope said.

We gathered for Mass at a convent of cloistered nuns last night here in Salamaca. It was a magnificent experience. Fr. Edmundo led the singing and offered prayers for both our group and the sisters. Today we are off to Madrid and Toledo...for a bit of sightseeing and down time...then two days in Lourdes before our return on the 17th. The weather continues to be clear and comfortable, and the group is getting along well indeed. As I suspected it would, each day is bringing new highlights which will surely make our pilgrimage trip memorable. We are keeping all of you in our prayers.

  26 Feb 07   Brothers,

I just received the following from the wife of a co-worker. He is in Iraq. Because of the size of the pictures, I am only sending one to you. But I think it speaks volumes.

Noting the last paragraph: I find it interesting that in requesting a care package, Trung doesn't ask for anything for himself. If any of you would like to donate to a care package, I would be happy to see that it gets to Trung.

Please keep Trung and our brother Knight Tony Struther in your prayers. Tony is en route the Gulf.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just wanted to send some pictures of Trung that was taken a few days ago. Two of them are of Trung handing out candies to the kids. They try to bring candies with them when they go out on missions. That particular day, they escorted their Iraqi General to a meeting, and most of them waited outside by the vehicles for a couple of hours.

The children usually gather around their vehicles yelling "mista...mista" asking for goodies. They usually throw out the candies from the gun turret (an opening at the top of the vehicle). The bigger boys usually get most of the candies. But since they were waiting around, Trung decided to get out and hand the candies to the smaller children and little girls. Well, that wasn't as easy as he thought. Trung was swarmed and mobbed by the kids. They grabbed candies from his hand and reached inside the bag. However, he did manage to hand some of the candies to the smaller girls and boys.

Trung ask that if the office would like to send him a care package, he would ask that you send candies and chocolates (wrapped), so that the guys can give them to the kids. The children they see usually look impoverished, so it is nice to see them
smile.
